The "Vanilla" Fleet

Posted by Captain Salem Vendari on September 25, 2014 at 4:50 PM Comments comments (0)

The "Vanilla" fleet is the most common type of fleet, and easiest to build. It's especially useful for teaching the game to new players. It consists of three types of ships:

  • The Main Gunship
  • The Desginated Gold-Runner
  • The Support Ship

Your main gunship should have four or five masts, with cannons no higher than rank 3. These cannons should also have a mix of L- and S-range, though this doesn't matter...

Using Hex-Grids

Posted by Captain Salem Vendari on June 28, 2013 at 1:35 PM Comments comments (0)

There is talk all over the web about playing Pirates of the Cursed Seas using a hex-grid. I have tried this myself and it seems to work fairly well. Just a couple of guidlines to follow when playing this style on a 1" hex-grid mat:

L = 4 spaces

S = 3 spaces

When given a move action, a ship may not move into a space immediately behind it (unless it has the Junk keyword). Like ...

Shipwreck Graveyard

This isn't so much of a scenario as a map setup. It may be used with any  scenario you play.

Players:
2+ players

Setup:
*Set up for a regular gold game, but replace several wild islands with Reef terrain.

*Place a shipwreck (a ship without one of its vertical hull pieces) in the middle of each Reef.

Game Play:
*Ships may explore shipwrecks as though they were wild islands.

*A ship must "doc...

Fort Raid

This scenario is similar to my Blockade Run scenario, except one player is trying to defend the fort while the other is trying to destroy it. Or it could be a free-for-all where everyone is trying to raid one another's fort.

Players:
2 players (or 4 players in teams of two)

3+ players (Deathmatch Style)

Battle of Culver's Cove

Posted by Captain Salem Vendari on June 23, 2013 at 12:35 AM Comments comments (0)

Tonight I got to visit with some old friends of mine. We had a delicious dinner at the ol' pub Culver's, and then we did battle with some pre-built fleets I had on hand. I took last pick, which is why I was again playing with a Spanish fleet. It was either that or Pirates. I decided I wanted a more battle-oriented fleet.

Captain Vendari:
Santa Catalina - Spain; Points: 9; Cargo: 2; Base Move: S+S; Cannons: 3L

Blockade Run

The Spanish have blockaded the English fort Ramsgate. The marines garrisoned inside the fort are in desparate need of supplies. Can their ships make it passed the Spanish blockade and bring them the provisions they need? Or will the Spanish armada prevail? It's up to you.

Players:
2 players

4 players as teams of two

Build Total:
Blockade: 50 points/30 each

Runner: 60 points/40 each (Cannot use Captain crew or sh...

Battle Royale

Posted by Captain Salem Vendari on May 28, 2013 at 1:55 PM Comments comments (2)

Cadet-Captain Mike once brought up a concern regarding an inbalance for combat between two "equally powered" fleets. The advantage always seems to go to whoever can get the first shot in. This scenario is an attempt to help even out the inbalance.

Players:
2+ players

Build Total:
50 points

Setup:
Place one island per player in a ring in in the middle of the playing field. Place another wild island in the mi...
