Tonight I got to visit with some old friends of mine. We had a delicious dinner at the ol' pub Culver's, and then we did battle with some pre-built fleets I had on hand. I took last pick, which is why I was again playing with a Spanish fleet. It was either that or Pirates. I decided I wanted a more battle-oriented fleet.
Santa Catalina - Spain; Points: 9; Cargo: 2; Base Move: S+S; Cannons: 3L, 3L, 3L; Ability: When this ship hits another ship, you choose which mast is eliminated.
El Algeciras - Spain; Points: 3; Cargo: 1; Base Move: S+L; Cannons: 2S. 3L; Ability: This ship may never load the last treasure from an island.
La Santa Isabel - Spain; Points: 13; Cargo: 6; Base Move: S+L; Cannons: 3S, 3S, 3S, 3S; Ability: Schooner. One of this ship's treasures is worth +2 treasure when unloaded at your home island.
Bazana - Spain; Points: 8; Cargo: 3; Base Move: S+S; Cannons: 3S, 3S; Ability: L-range cannons can't hit this ship.
HMS Endeavour - England; Points: 21; Cargo: 4; Base Move: L; Cannons: 2L, 2L, 2L, 2L, 2L; Ability: This ship eliminates two masts with one hit.
+Hermione Gold - England; Points: 5; Ability: Captain, Helmsman.
HMS Half Moon - England; Points: 9; Cargo: 5; Base Move: S+S; Cannons: 3S, 3S; Ability: Once per turn, this ship may randomly take one treasure from any ship she touches.
+Sir Meyer Hmpstead - England; Points: 5; Ability: Black Mark. If this ship wins a boarding party, she make take as much treasure from the other ship as she can cary.
USS Hudson - America; Points: 12; Cargo: 3; Base Move: S+L; Cannons: 3L, 3L, 3L, 3S; Ability: Schooner. Once per turn, when this ship hits an enemy ship, also eliminate one crew from that ship.
+Chief PO Charles Richard - America; Points: 4; Ability: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against any non-American ship or fort.
+Ralph David - America; Points: 1; Ability: Eternal, Hostile: Pirate.
Philadelphia - America; Points: 11; Cargo: 3; Base Move: S+L; Cannons: 5S, 5S; Ability: You own any derelict this ship explores; both ships become docked at your home island.
Argo - America; Points: 9; Cargo: 3; Base Move: S+L; Cannons: 4L, 4L; Ability: This ship ignores terrain when given a move action (islands are not terrain).
The map was Captain Vendari's classic three-player set up: A ring of six islands around one central island. Every other island in the ring was a home island. Going clockwise was first Mike, then John, and finally Vendari. The wild islands in the ring each had four treasures while the center island held eight.
Mike went first. He started out completely confident that he was going to just ram Vendari's ships. His plans changed when John sent the Philadelphia toward the island between their home islands. But the HMS Half Moon was going to beat the American by a turn, so he wasn't worried. The HMS Endeavour, however took a nice chunk out of the American captain's insurance as she sent the ship to the bottom as she moved toward the central island. One ship down, two to go. But HMS Endeavour's crew saw some sparklies on the beach of the island, and made for the shore, picking up a 5, a 7, and a 1.
Over in Captain Vendari's waters, La Santa Isabel cleaned out the island between Vendari and John. Bazana was en route toward the center of the map, with El Algeciras as her escort, when the USS Hudson came up and blew off both of the latter ship's masts, blowing her Captain off the quarter-deck in the process. Vendari retaliated by using the Santa Catalina to blast away two of the Hudson's masts, and Bazana knocking down the third. John tried to use the last cannon to sink El Algeciras, but the morale of her crew was in disarray, and they missed their target.
After the Catalina took out the final mast, Bazana initiated towing the derelict schooner. About the same time, the Argo tried to ram the Santa Isabel, whose holds were briming with gold. Failing the ram, and having nothing to lose, the crew swung over to the Spaniard, but were beaten back without even a doubloon to show for their effort. Vendari's Santa Catalina derelicted that, and the Santa Isabel towed the American home for repairs, unloading 9 gold points while their.
Up north, HMS Half Moon made it home with a 6 a few 1s and 2s while HMS Endeavour moved to nab the gold on the last remaining island. With repairs finished, Captain Vendari sent any ship that had a Captain onboard to take out the English juggernaut. The Isabel snatched the remaining five 1s Mike had left on the central island while the Hudson and Catalina moved into attack position. After the attack ships dismasted her, the Santa Isabel took her under tow, claiming her crew and her gold.
At the end of the game, Mike actually ended up winning with 26 gold, with Vendari coming in close second with the remaining 22 gold. John unfortunately was unable to grab any gold, but admittedly he was relatively new to the game, and the admirals dove right into the game without taking an opportunity to explain how the fleets were supposed to work, which was an advantage Vendari didn't realize he had.
