The "Vanilla" Fleet

Posted by Captain Salem Vendari on September 25, 2014 at 4:50 PM

The "Vanilla" fleet is the most common type of fleet, and easiest to build. It's especially useful for teaching the game to new players. It consists of three types of ships:

  • The Main Gunship
  • The Desginated Gold-Runner
  • The Support Ship

Your main gunship should have four or five masts, with cannons no higher than rank 3. These cannons should also have a mix of L- and S-range, though this doesn't matter too much. The main gunship will usually be the most expensive and have several cargo spaces for crew. A lot of the time you can get by using just the Captain/Helmsman combo, however.

The Designated Gold-Runner typically has a one-digit point cost. This, as well as base move and cargo capacity need to be considered. Speed is greatly of the essence, as you need to be able to get to islands and load gold quickly. In addition, you need to be able to outrun enemy gunships that may be trying to sink you. You may want to add a Helmsman for extra speed. If there's enough room, you might consider giving this ship an Explorer to be able to load treasure once you dock. In general, you will want to leave at least 3 cargo spaces open to carry treasure. Don't worry too much about cannons, though it is nice to have low-ranked cannons so the ship can defend itself.

The Support Ship is what gives variety to vanilla fleets. There are many options here. This ship can be used as a support fighter for the main gunship, helping out in major engagements against opposing gunships, or harassing the enemy gold line. Or, you could use this ship to assist in running gold back to your home island. You could throw on a Navigator and use it as a Trade Current generator to increase the speed of your fleet. It's really up to you what you decide to do with this ship.
